Historical

The seminary was established in 1910 as Clinton German Seminary in Clinton, Missouri, south of Kansas City. The school was intended to train young Seventh-day Adventists of German background to be able to perform more effective evangelistic work among the German-speaking population in North America. At that time almost 10 million people in the United States were of German origin, more than 10% of the entire population of the country. In the wake of tension that arose towards the German population in the United States during World War I the name of the seminary was changed in 1917 to Clinton Theological Seminary. At that time the teachers started to teach classes in English rather than German, except for the German language classes and the homiletics classes. During the war the German language had become unpopular and people with a German background tried to assimilate as much as possible into the larger culture. Through these changes in society at large the school had lost much of its uniqueness and had also more or less fulfilled its mission inasmuch as German language teaching was no longer deemed necessary. When the enrollment decreased at Clinton after the war, the school was confronted increasingly with financial difficulties. The lack of interest in the German language and the financial difficulty raised the question if a separate German institution was really necessary. In 1925 the Clinton campus was sold and the German Department moved to Broadview College at La Grange, Illinois.
