International Adventist Musicians Association. IAMA (1984-2019)

- Existence: 1984 - 2019
The International Adventist Musicians Association (IAMA) began in 19843 and ceased active operation in 2019. Dan Shultz from Walla Walla University was the driving force behind the association for most of its later years. The purpose of IAMA was as
- a forum where music-related issues and ideas can be discussed and presented
- a source for news about what is happening in music in the Seventh-day Adventist church, and
- a reference for information about music and musicians in the Seventh-day Adventist church
All who were interested in music in the Adventist church were invited to join. Members received two issues of IAMA’s online newsletter, Notes. Additionally, IAMA provided a listing service for music positions, an IAMA Hotline, and a website. They had members in 17 countries. One major accomplishment was a fourteen-year project creating biographical listings at the IAMA website of over 1,100 musicians associated with the Seventh-day Adventist church. They also published the Seventh-day Adventist Musicians Biographical Dictionary in 2014.
Perhaps the most enduring contribution of IAMA is their periodical called, Notes, or, IAMA Online Notes. The periodical carried musical news, open music-related positions, and articles documenting the musical program at most Adventist colleges and universities in North America as well as some secondary schools and some international schools as information became available, and biographies of musicians.
In 2019, Dan Shultz determined he could not continue supporting IAMA on his own. When attempts to find someone willing to take it over failed, he terminated the association according to the constitution, and transferred the Association’s records to the Andrews University Center for Adventist Research.
