Matilda Erickson Andross was born February 10, 1880 in Aalborg, Denmark and apparently immigrated to the United States with her family while still a child. Upon her graduation in 1907 from Union College where she studied nursing, Matilda moved to Washington, D. C. to work as Assistant Secretary for the Sabbath School Department under Mrs. L. Flora Plummer. Matilda’s responsibilities led her to work extensively with the newly organized Missionary Volunteer department. In 1920, Matilda married the widowed Elmer E. Andross and with him served in the Inter-American Division. Upon retirement, Matilda returned to the Washington, D. C. area with her husband who died in 1950. Matilda died in Glendale, CA on February 9, 1957 from injuries sustained in anautomobile accident.

Content Description From the Collection: This collection contains many of Andross’ articles, sermon outlines, and several topical files including correspondence related to the revision of Uriah Smith’s Daniel and the Revelation. There is also a memo book with notes taken during his travels in Africa and Asia.

Content Description Matilda wrote extensively both for and about young people. This collection contains articles and other materials related to the Missionary Volunteer program, as well as a book manuscript, talk outlines, and the writings of other people collected by Matilda. Before her marriage, Matilda published under the name Matilda Erickson. After her marriage books and articles bear the name Matilda E. Andross.
