S. Douglas Waterhouse was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, July 20, 1931. He graduate in 1956 from La Sierra University with a B.A. in History. He took graduate studies at the Oriental Institute, University of Chicago in biblical Hebrew, ancient Near Eastern history and archaeology. After that he continued graduate studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor majoring in ancient Near Eastern languages, literature, and culture where he graduated with a PhD in 1965. In 1963, Waterhouse began teaching in both the undergraduate History and Religion Departments of Andrews University until his retirement from the Religion Department in 1996.
