Biographical

Dorothy Blake Walter was born on June 6, 1908, in Stroud, OK, and married L. Beulah Henry Blake on August 15, 1935. In 1927, she received the Elementary teaching credentials (SDA), and worked as an elementary school teacher from 1927 to 1931. Between 1931 and 1936 she worked as a nurse at the St. Helena Sanitarium and Hospital where she also became a registered nurse in 1934. From 1936 to 1941, she worked again as an elementary school teacher, and from 1941 to 1946 as a secretary. Then she worked as a recorder (1946-1948) and administrative assistant (1950-1963) in the Office of Admissions and Records at Pacific Union College (PUC). In 1959 she graduated with a B.S. from Pacific Union College, and in 1961 she received the California Elementary teaching credentials. While working as a supervisor in the Office of Graduate Studies at PUC (1963-1967), she taught classes in professional writing. In 1967 she also completed the fifth year of College which was equivalent to the requirements of an M.A. From 1967 to 1968 she was a teacher of Literature and Professional Writing at PUC. Between 1968 and 1970 she worked together with Ruth Wheeler as co-author and layout editor on a Seventh-day Adventist Health / Science Series for grades 1 to 4, at the General Conference in Takoma Park, Washington, D.C. The following two years she served as the Assistant Director of Admissions and Records at Columbia Union College (CUC). From 1971 to 1976 she was the Associate Director of Admissions and Records at CUC.

She authored more than 1,000 published stories, articles, and poems that appeared in Adventist and non-Adventist periodicals publications. She used several pen names such as Dorothy Walter, Katherine Blake, Kay Blake, Dorothy Blake, Katherine Ross, and Dorothy Ross. For about two years she was a columnist for the journal Life and Health. Together with Ruth Wheeler she wrote the health and science text books for the General Conference, grades 1 to 4. In 1961 her book, Worship Time, was an award book of the Pacific Press Publishing Association. She was listed in various Who’s Who books.

In 1966 the “Dorothy Blake Walter Collection” of her published works and some unpublished manuscripts was set up in the Center for the Study of 20th Century Literature at the Mugar Memorial Library of the Boston University Libraries (at their request).
