Richard Everett Harris was born July 3, 1929, delivered by Dr. Lauretta Kress (1863-1955) at the Washington Sanitarium, Takoma Park, Maryland. Graduated from Washington Missionary College in 1948, he worked as Bible instructor, pastor, teacher and editor. The family of Richard Everett Harris, minister, teacher, editor, have been closely associated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church from its beginning. His great grandfather's sister, Rachel Harris Oakes Preston (1809-1868) of Vernon, Vermont, introduced the Sabbath teaching to the early Adventist believers at Washington, N. H. in 1844. His great grandmother, Mary E. Harris (1823-1903) of South Lancaster, Maine, was a close friend of Ellen G. White (1827-1915). Mrs. White refers to their pleasant association in her diaries. His grandfather, Chapin H. Harris (1852-1937) was looked upon as a son by Mrs. White and she gave him four letters of testimony cautioning him regarding his friendship with Martha B. Stratton (1857-1918).
