Content Description

The Joseph Wolff Papers Collection contains Joseph Wolff’s correspondence, journals, and other various writings from his time as a missionary. This is a combination of original material from the time of Wolff, along with much material compiled and copied by Wolff’s second wife, Louisa, following Joseph’s death. Wolff’s annotated personal Bible can be found in this collection. Biographical materials about Wolff’s extended family are also included.

Provenance

The Center for Adventist Research purchased the items in this collection from various rare book dealers in the United States and Europe in 2022 and 2023. Som e of the items in this collection were apparently held by Joseph Wolff’s descendants until purchased by Samy Hofmann (Magnus Books), a rare book dealer in Paris, France. The Samy Hofmann items forms the bulk of this collection. During the summer of 2022, CAR purchased the following items from Hofmann: Joseph Wolff’s Bible, manuscript books one and two, Emma King’s diary, the “Three Dialogues” manuscript by R. W., the 1842 tract, A Description of the Villa of Mr. Horace Walpole, and an 1835 edition of Researches and Missionary Labours among the Jews, Mohammadans, & Other Sects that bears a stamp from Teheran.
