F. D. (Francis David) Nichol (1897-1966) served the Seventh-day Adventist Church in several positions, most notably as editor of the Review and Herald, the general church paper, from 1945 to his death in 1966. Nichol was an unapologetic defender of the faith of Seventh-day Adventists, ever ready to give an answer for Adventist beliefs. His commitment to the church’s beliefs and historical foundation is readily seen in the numerous books he authored. Notable among these are The Midnight Cry (1944), Answers to Objections (1952), and Ellen White and Her Critics (1951). Nichol’s work as chief editor of the Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary has left a lasting impact on Adventism. This work has for many years been a benchmark in Adventist Biblical scholarship. The F. D. Nichol Collection consists of two main groups of materials. The first are those materials used in the production of his book on the Millerite movement, The Midnight Cry. This group consists largely of photostatic copies of correspondence from the Millerite Era and other Millerite and early Adventist publications. The collection includes many original copies of Adventist publications, including some original copies of The Present Truth. The second group consists of other various materials associated with Nichol’s work as a book editor of the Review and Herald Publishing Association. The materials in this group do not relate as directly to his work on The Midnight Cry. These include various Adventist periodicals, an extensive section of Sabbath-related materials from the 17th century (photostatic copies), prophecy charts collected by LeRoy E. Froom, the writings of “Opponents, Fanatics, Extremists, and Apostates,” and materials relating to Robert Wieland’s manuscript, “1888 Re-Examined.”

Provenance

The collection was originally brought together by Nichol himself or his research assistants as he collected materials for his book, The Midnight Cry. The collection was later given to the Review and Herald Library. Subsequently, the collection was given by the Review and Herald Publishing Association to the Center for Adventist Research in December 2004.
