Benjamin Gerald McArthur was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, on February 12, 1951, as the sixth and final child born to John and Ruby Shafer McArthur. Benjamin spent his childhood in Lincoln, attending Helen Hyatt Elementary School and College View Academy, both schools on the campus of Union College, a Seventh-day Adventist college. He also spent a year boarding at Enterprise Academy in Enterprise, Kansas. After earning a bachelor’s degree in history at Andrews University, McArthur went on to graduate work at the University of Chicago where he received his Ph.D. in American Cultural History in 1979. After graduation, he began a long teaching career at the Southern Adventist University History Department in Collegedale, Tennessee. From 2009 to 2012, he served as the Academic Dean of Southwestern Adventist University in Keene, Texas. In addition to his teaching and administrative roles, McArthur published three books, numerous articles, and organized a number of academic conferences. He died April 10, 2017. He was 66 years old.

The Southern Adventist University History Department donated the Benjamin McArthur papers to the Andrews University Center for Adventist Research in April 2023.
