Mary Kate Gafford was born July 4, 1899, in Mexia, Texas. She received a B.A. degree from Mary Hardin-Baylor College, Belton Texas, in 1923. She taught English, Library Science, and commercial subjects in high school at Banner Elk, North Carolina, and at Southwestern Junior College, Keene, Texas. In 1932 she earned a B.S. degree in Library Science from George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tennessee. Around that time she moved to Madison College, Madison Tennessee, and served as an assistant librarian. She was also a long-term member of the Madison College band and orchestra. As a past time, she wrote poetry some of which were published in denominational publications such as the Review and Herald. Gafford died on January 23, 1979, at the Madison Hospital.
