Kilgore Family Papers
Content Description
The Kilgore Family Papers consist of two principle parts: the family’s personal correspondence, and the business correspondence of Charles L. Kilgore. The personal correspondence is primarily that of Letha Ethel (Hall) Kilgore (1872-1928), the wife of Charles L. Kilgore, though it includes some of her husband’s and other family members’ correspondence. The business correspondence is divided into three categories. The first is a letter-book of correspondence from R.M and C.L. Kilgore who were serving as President and Secretary/Auditor of the Southern Union Conference, respectively. The correspondence is to various denominational workers, and deals primarily with accounting issues. The second category is correspondence concerning the Southern Training School from 1897-1909. Both R.M. and C.L. Kilgore were board members of the school. This part of the collection is not restricted to Kilgore correspondence, but includes copies of correspondence among board members, school officials, union officials, and General Conference officials, as well as drafts of certain documents from the Board of Trustees concerning the school. The third category consists of correspondence from the early 1930’s when Charles L. Kilgore was working for Ayers & Hammond Insurance-Real Estate, which provided insurance to several denominational entities. The correspondence deals primarily with billing, investment, policy, and claim issues.
