 Collection
Identifier:  Collection 223

Content Description

The bulk of this collection centers around Burton Phipps’ 32-year tenure as a teacher and later head of the Emmanuel Missionary College (now Andrews University) Biology department. During this time Barbara graduated from Emmanuel Missionary College, taught for a few years, and then returned where she became a librarian in the College library. Her mother, Nettie, worked at Northwestern University, University of Michigan, and Chicago University... (now the University of Chicago). In 1961 Barbara and her parents moved to Pacific Union College where Burton taught biology and Barbara worked in the library.

This collection contains memorabilia, documents, and photographs connected with their careers. Of significance are early pictures of the tract and missionary society in Springfield, Illinois, and photos relating to the biology department at Emmanuel Missionary College, including a few pictures of conventions of Adventist biology teachers. In addition, the Phipps had a wide circle of friends as evidenced by numerous Christmas cards they exchanged with their friends. The collection encompasses a broad window into the life of the Phipps including Christmas cards from other friends (such as the Eatons, Smiths, Gaylord, etc.), family vacations, life at Emmanuel Missionary College, and Pacific Union College.
